Hi

A usability suggestion...

You really should get rid of the "reset" button at the foot of the registration form! This has no practical function apart from wiping out user's data when they click it by accident. Which is seriously annoying...

It's a long time since I've seen one of those evil things - I work in web usability and it's axiomatic these days that reset buttons are a very bad idea indeed.

And while I'm at it, do you really need both a Captcha field *and* the spam question? Seems over the top, and another obstacle to getting registered.

Hope this is helpful

Geoff

The reset button is still an open issue, but I removed the antispam question for now. Moderating new users seems to be serving the same purpose.

I'd like to add that the password "rules" are needlessly restrictive. It forced me to create a password that is different from the format I usually use. Consequently, I just spent five minutes attempting to log in until I remembered the password.... and then had to enter the scrambled code.... twice..... because I had exceeded the allowed number of login attempts.

Who cares whether my password is "secure" or not? What is the downside of using a less secure password? Just a bit of annoyance if it gets hacked is all. And who would want to hack it anyway?

Paul

Spammers try to hack the board regularly. Sorry to hear that the password code was inconvenient for you, however as most of the internet is moving towards more secure password requirements, we are too.

Our volunteers work very hard to keep this board as spam-free as possible, for the enjoyment of our members. I hope that benefit outweighs the inconvenience of the password requirements for you.

I don't mind having to use "more secure" passwords..... to a point. What I mind is that each forum seems to have different ideas about what a "secure" password is. That forces me to come up with a unique password in this case..... one that I am unlikely to remember. Seems to me that almost ANY password in ANY format longer than a couple digits is quite secure as long as you limit the number of retries in any given period, no?

Case in point. After being away for a while, I found a thread today I wanted to contribute to. However, I could not remember the password format I was forced to use so I clicked the RESEND PASSWORD link and got a new password assigned. Great. But I can't find any way to change that random password to something I have a prayer of remembering. I looked everywhere in the user section. What am I missing?

Paul,

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. It seems that the password change feature, which should be available when you go to your profile and click on Registration Information, has been turned off.

I can understand why this has caused you frustration, and we will attempt to fix the matter as soon as possible. I will notify you when it is fixed.

Again, we apologize for the inconvenience, and we appreciate your contributions to the board, problems notwithstanding.

Your Admin,
Michael
