Is there a trick to playing these notes? I'm working on 4-octave scales right now and I'm finding that these notes are actually off the fingerboard... Is that right?

I don't actually know anything about the scales you speak of, nor do I have a clue which notes you're talking about.

But.

I understand it's possible to play notes off the end of the fingerboard - for instance, my cello teacher has to do this when playing the top E in the first movement of elgar. I think it's a case of, press quite hard, be very careful with the bow, and very close to the bridge.

Good luck...

Thanks... I was numbering the octave of the notes (open A is A4 i believe, although I don't have this memorized). In any case, I'll keep doing what I've been doing and follow your advice... Glad to know I wasn't completely off after all!

Well, my cello teacher, and therefore I, take the opinion that if it makes the "right" sound then there's nothing wrong with doing it...

I think open A is A2. Middle C is C3 as far as I recall, I may be wrong.

Open A is A3.

When playing past the end of the finger board you shouldn't have to do anything but play the note like a harmonic. If it squeaks, it means that your bow is to far from the bridge, your finger is not making a definite enough contact with the string (don't push on the string, but balance your finger so that there is no pad of your finger to make the note unclear, try playing with the very tips of your fingers), or there is rosin on the string where you are trying to place your fingers.
